Atlantic Drive – Rosguill Peninsula, Co Donegal

Tranarosan Bay, Co Donegal, Ireland. Yes Ireland, this beautiful beach is in Ireland :)

The Wild Atlantic Way is an incredible coastal touring route in Ireland stretching from Malin Head in Co Donegal to Mizen Head in Co Cork.

I thought it was about time I started to see some of this route so off I went with my two adventure buddies Barry Mac being one and the other my sister, I drag her everywhere when heading off to see the sights. It was only a wee 3 hour car journey each way to see the beautiful Atlantic Drive on the Rosguill Peninsula…..and that it was!

When we arrived we thought it was best for us to drive (a little more) around the Atlantic Drive loop but I think the best way to appreciate the beauty of this coastline would be to take a bicycle around it (approx. 12KM) stopping off at the spectacular view points from Sheephaven Bay to Horn Head, then onto Tranarosan Bay that forms a link between two headlands, of course snapping up some shots (not the bar shots haha) then onto Melmore Head with views across to Fanad Head. There is a pitch and putt facility along this road and we stopped off at a traditional Irish pub called The Singing Pub in Downings for lunch that was very tasty.

As you drive along this windy road admiring the views of the chilling ocean or the high green mountains surrounding you, you will most likely pass an artist or two, or three (maybe not in winter though) at the side of the road painting the scene ahead while filling and refilling their cups with a nice cup of tea. The Irish are champion tea drinkers, haha! It does look a little nippy in these photos below but it was actually a nice sunny day :)

When you live here or in the North as I do and you very seldom see a sunny day that’s warm enough to hit the beach, you don’t think you could be heading to somewhere this beautiful that is situated just a few of hours across the country. Donegal alone is home to not only this stunning beach but also 13 blue flag beaches across the County.
